Do Not BuyThis was the first book I bought to prepare for the LSAT prior to taking a proper prep course. I plowed through and did really well on all the tests. I was pretty confident, until I noticed that the book was published in 2004. I decided to pick up the latest Princeton Review book (2011) and started from the beginning. When I got to the testing section, I was in for a huge shock. The questions on the Princeton Review were SIGNIFICANTLY harder than this book and actually inline with every actual LSAT I have downloaded from the net. This book was a poor prep tool, unless you just want to boost your confidence.
Do NOT waste your money on this book. Buy a proper, up to DATE prep book. You'll be grateful.
Can't Believe the Number of Typos/Errors!I picked this book up at the book store without the benefit of these reviews--my mistake! There are too many typos/errors in the book. I'm taking the LSAT in December, so I've discarded this one for Powerscore's Logic Games Bible. I wouldn't recommend this one.
Really Helpful...Until You See an ACTUAL LSATThis book does an excellent job of making the LSATs seem simple. It provides commonsense and "zen" strategies that work perfectly well for the sample problems provided in the book but unfortunately they simply don't translate well to the actual test material. They do say in this book that it is only helpful if used in conjunction with actual LSAT practice tests which I absoutely agree with. While it does provide some interesting insights and approaches and make you feel like you are completely capable of nailing the LSAT it drastically overly simplifies what is involved in answering LSAT questions and will leave you stunned on test day if you don't use other methods of preparation. In short, it's a good book to flip through when you're feeling overwhelmed by study material or having a panic attack, but should only be used as some light reading to supplement your study routine.
For VERY basic intro info ONLYLet me say to the audience reading this, HELLO THIS IS A "for dummies" book what do you expect!?
Alright I sought out this book purely for the basics of the LSAT. I did the same for GMAT and I thought that the GMAT version did a really decent job communicating the hurdles one has to go through to do well on the test, however for the last edition I thought it was too "soft." I did read through it but the approaches suggested were too rudimentary to be of any use to a serious last taker. The logic games section is a pure joke.
I say use this book simply to get a very BASIC idea of what to expect, don't spend more than 1.5 hours going through this book then move on! I gave this two stars because I don't understand how this company can do so well presenting GMAT and fail so miserably presenting LSAT. I do not recommend that any of their concepts be put to use outside of your very first attempt at practice questions. I firmly believe the best stuff out there is published by Powerscore and lsac. The stuff can get expensive but it truly is well worth it, the rest can be seen purely as supplemental and can be gotten at your local library! Save your money for the real deal and invest in Powerscore and lsac.
Better than expected but wrong answers is a letdown.Positives:
1) It's cheap!
2) Shows you how to condense information into shorthand notation.
3) She explains things in a very concise and simple format.
3) For anyone seriously considering taking the LSAT this is a good book to start with but terrible choice to end on.
4) Corrections are available from the dummies website and you can download them via MS word format.
Negatives:
1) It's a fact this book has typo's.
2) This book has answers that are flat out wrong, and its disappointing that this book went to print in 2004 has not been reprinted for 2009 with all of the corrections added. The only reason this book gets a 4 star is the corrections are available from the dummies website and you can download them via MS word format. This also provides proof that the publisher knows that this book is riddled with mistakes.
3) If you only have 3-4 weeks to prepare this isn't the book for you and I do not care for the fact that this author acts as if this would be enough time. If your an average student you need 2-3 months to prepare no less.
4) If you are not self motivated ditch the book idea and sign up for a class.
